Literature Text

Red awoke to a knock on her bedroom door in the pod, and she brushed some strands of hair from her eyes.  “Who’s there?”

“It’s me – I’ve got something to show you!”  Red threw her covers aside and took the two steps necessary to cross the room, sliding the door open to have a newspaper shoved in her face.  “I think I found out what our fearless captain was doing yesterday.”

Red took the paper and stared at it, letting her tired eyes focus a moment before reading the article.  It told a brief story of a bar fight involving three University men and a mercenary in a brown top hat.  Two of the men had left – one dragged by the other – and the third was left on the floor unconscious.  The woman left after the fight had ended.  After reading the whole article, she handed the paper back to Zinfandel and slid the door shut.  She wasn’t going to deal with anything like that before noon.

Zinfandel’s next stop was Alex’s room – she hadn’t returned before Red and Zinfandel, and she had to see if she was back yet.  After not receiving and answer with a sharp knock, she paced a moment.  “Alex?  You there?”

Alex slid her door open, pressing a bag of ice to her cheek and looking exhausted.  “Yeah?”  The bag of ice couldn’t hide the bruise that covered most of her cheek and her black eye, but she didn’t really seem phased by it – and neither did Zinfandel.

“You really got yourself into a mess, didn’t you?  Why were you fighting with three University guys?”

Alex shrugged, “I was actually fighting alongside one of them, against the other two…”  Her voice drawled out, not mentioning the reasons behind it.

“All right,” Zinfandel knew better than to ask about any of Alex’s escapades – she was used to her captain running off for her own reasons, “well, Red and I spent some time around the city yesterday.  Meron gave us 200,000 for the loot – he already transferred it to our account – and we headed to the mechanical distract to track down a plasma engine for a decent price.  Meron gave us the tip of a P-1005 engine sold for a bit over 150,000, so I figured we’d try to get one for just over 100,000.  Well, we happened to find a P-1200 for just under 140,000.  It’s being delivered in a few days, and I think I’ll have it installed by the end of next week.  I also talked to Meron this morning, and he said he’d find me a dealer for the old engine, though the price won’t be very high…  It’s a bit early to call it an antique!”

Alex groaned as soon as she chuckled – her face hurt despite the ice.  “So we’ll be here a couple of weeks then?”

“That’s what I’m thinking…  I’m going to teach Red about the mechanics of this boat – she’d never been in a pod before this one, and doesn’t know the guts of them,”

“Sounds good…  If it takes longer than that, don’t worry about it.  We don’t have any jobs, and I have a bit of business to take care of here anyway.”

At this point, Zinfandel just couldn’t resist, “What happened, anyway?”  As expected, she received a door being slammed in her face, and walked away, tossing her newspaper in the trash on the way down to the garage to get the engine.
Yeah, guess I haven't posted in awhile. I'm quite far past this in writing, so I figured I'd post stuff finally.

So. Yes. Enjoy.
